Objectives in Resume – the gateway of yours
The gateway of any resume is the objective. It always comes at the top of the resume and reveals the roadmap of the resume to the evaluator. A clearly stated objective attracts the reader, similarly a clumsy objective repels. Anne Frank rightly says, “We all live with the objective of being happy, our lives are all different and yet the same”. ‘How to write resume’ – is a very common question, whereas ‘how to write objective’ gets a lower precedence. We advise just the reverse. Now, if you want to select your objective, you must translate it to smaller objectives as we had discussed and every job demands a different presentation of the same objective. Nevertheless, it must be clear, concise as well as precise. Let us take an example, “A challenging position in your esteemed organization to prove my ability to seek an opportunity personal growth”. Is the objective clear? Which position are you applying for? How past experience has helped you to achieve this challenging position you are opting for? What sort of growth are you expecting? What sort of challenge are you ready to accept? A statement like “A challenging position in your sales team to prove my ability towards the goal of organizational development” becomes more precise and this clearly stated objective reveals your willingness towards to the Sales/ Marketing segment. The situation becomes worse, when you don’t have a job. Desperations at times confuse you while writing your resume. It becomes more like a boxer who tries to throw continuous blows aimlessly with a hope of hitting at least one or two. Alas! Even the corporate houses hardly like to recruit any contused persons as the fact of life is that if a person is confused about his objective/ aim in life, he also loses his focus in his work. If one wants to switch over then the objective must narrate how the present and past experiences are going to add value to the new post, you are looking for. A sales person, switching over to Accounts may draw analogy in figure management. Senior level professionals are expected to focus their management quality and effectiveness in their success story. We reiterate the objective must be supported by the remaining part of your resume. We want to conclude with the famous quotes of Peter F. Drucker, “Management by objective works - if you know the objectives. Ninety percent of the time you don't.” |
